County names as they appear today in West Virginia

The map at right of the counties of West Virginia show the locations of many county names important in the life of Anna Eliza Payne (#16). It was not until 1863 that West Virginia became its own separate state. Prior to that, it was a part of Virginia and county boundaries were likely changing too.

Grafton in Taylor County, Virginia was Anna's birthplace in 1858.

The 1860 census shows the Payne family was living in Preston County, Virginia.

After the death of her father in 1861, Anna was separated from her siblings. Anna's name appeared in the Taylor County Census of 1870. She was being raised by the Shirer family. Two of her sisters (Mary Olive Payne and Lucy Ellen Payne) went to live with their uncle, William Hardie, in Mineral County, as is indicated in the Mineral County Census of 1870.

The 1880 Census for Taylor County shows Anna is 22 and living with her husband, Henry C. Colerider (#15).

In 1890, following the tragic death of their son, Marion, Anna and Henry moved from Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia to Fayetteville, North Carolina.
