131. Josiah Noble (Nobles) (Married Olive Hill (#132) on 29 October 1765). This information, researched by Russell Leach, is confirmed by James Cox Brady and his ancestry, by Louis Effingham De Forest, New York: De Forest Publishing Co., 1933 p. 344.[The wedding date is confirmed by information from Jackie <JessJackie@aol.com> . Born: 19 November 1737 in Southwick, Massachusetts of John Noble (#261) & Lydia Bush (#262) at Southwick, Massachusetts. A manuscript titled, James Cox Brady and his ancestry, by Louis Effingham De Forest, New York: De Forest Publishing Co., 1933 p. 344 states that he was born November 19, 1737 at Southwick, Massachusetts. [His date of birth is confirmed by
Jackie <JessJackie@aol.com> . Her source of the information was from Family of Thomas Noble of Westfield, Mass compiled by Lucius M. Boltwood.]

Died: 28 May 1818 at Pownal, Vermont. This date and place, researched by Russell Leach, are supported by James Cox Brady and his ancestry, by Louis Effingham De Forest, New York: De Forest Publishing Co., 1933 p. 344. This sources goes on to say that his age when he died was eighty. He died of cancer.

a) Amos Noble: Born: 8 December 1735 in Southwick, Hampden, Massachusetts. Died: 20 March 1753;

b) Eli Noble: (Married: 1:Ruth Campbell, 2:Elizabeth Dewey (Follett)) Born: 16 October 1739 in Southwick, Massachusetts. Died:December 1827 at 88 (Source:p. 510 of History and Genealogy of the Family of Thomas Noble, of Westfield, Massachusetts. with Genealogical Notes of Other Families by the name of Noble. Compiled by Lucius M. Boltwood, Privately Printed. Hartford, Conn.: Press Of The Case, Lockwood & Brainard Company. 1878 states that his gravestone, among other inaccuracies states that he d. Feb. 13, 1826 age 60. 13 February 1829 at 90 ys.; he is suppose to be buried at Morgan-Towslee Memorial Cemetery in Pownal, Vermont; his wife Ruth is also buried there. (Source the Pownal Historical Website). [Note: the stone shown at the website does not appear to show the 1829 date, the age of 90 ys, or Feb. 13, 1826, so that Eli may not be Josiah's brother].There is an Eli Noble on Images 89 & 90 of Roll 90 of U.S. Revolutionary War Rolls 1775-1783> Vermont, listed as Justice of the Peace; Image 120 & 121 lists Eli as a Captain. (One or both of these may be this Eli); An ancestry.com descendent ("hazeltonia") posts his death as 13 Feb 1826 in Pownal, Bennington, Bermont. Miscellaneous: On a visit to Pownal Center Cemetery, Pownal, Vermont on July 22, 2007, Susan Snyder located the burial site of one of Eli and Ruth's children's (Abner's) wife, Esther Boltwood. According to LDS, Abner was born 25 Dec 1761 in Southwick, Hamden, Mass; and died 25 November 1829. (These dates in red are confirmed by a posting by one of his direct descendents on Ancestry.com, "hazeltonia.) His wife, Esther, whom he married 1 January 1795, is buried next to him. Esther died on 1 January 1820 in her 57 year according to tombstone records recorded at the Pownal Historical Society Website and her tombstone. Several of their children are buried in that family plot. Clarissa died 15 October 1815 at 19 yrs, 3 days, and William B. died 18 September 1795 age 8 days. Abner's tombstone was not located. Abner married Meletiah Downs in Pownal on 5 May 1820 [Perhaps Abner is buried with Meletiah]. (By a DNA match, Captain Eli Noble, was confirmed to both the webmaster of this site and from a direct descendent of Eli, known as "hazeltonia" on the Ancestry.com DNA website.)

c) John Noble: (Married: 1:T. Curtis, 2: L. Pratt) Born: 24 May 1743 in Southwick, Hampden, Massachusetts. Died: 28 February 1828 in Pownal at the age of eighty-four. The following were Josiah's half brothers and sisters. They had the same father, John Noble (#261), but their mother was Elizabeth Remmington.

a) Elizabeth Noble: Born: Bapt. July 10, 1748, Died: in infancy, being accidentally scalded.

b) Elizabeth Noble: (Married: Enos Loomis) Born: 23 January 1750. Died: ?

c) Eunice Nobel: (Married: Thomas Campbell) Born: about 1752 Died: ?

d) Amos Nobel: (Married: Abigail Hanchett [daughter of Ezra Hanchett] on 10 May 1780) Born: April 1756. Died: 5 December 1834, aged 78. He had brown hair and hazel eyes, and was of medium height. He was a farmer in Southwick and died there. He and his wife had no children..

Miscellaneous:

He and his brother Eli moved to Pownal as early at November 1766.

Josiah was one of the 185 Pownall petitioners who wrote a letter to the King of England about a problem with grants and patents for the land. The letter in its entirety and the list of petitioners can be read at On the Spot in Pownall-1766.

He served in the French and Indian War and in the American revolution. He was a farmer, in 1858, his farm was occupied by Anderson Barber.

According to U.S. Revolutionary War Rolls 1775-1783, there was a Corporal Josiah Noble on Roll Box 90. This may be this Josiah?

Josiah and his brothers Captain Eli Noble and John Noble are listed as Revolutionary soldiers buried in Pownal, Vermont. This list was compiled by Walter H. Crockett, of St. Alans, Secretary of the Vermont Society, Sons of the American Revolution, additional to the list printed in the Proceedings of the Vermont Historical Society for 1903-04.

In 1790 census for Pownal Town in Bennington County, Vermont, Josiah Nobles is listed with 1 male over 15, 2 males under 16, and 6 females.

Below is a map showing the location of Pownall, VT. Also, note the location of Stephentown, NY (later called Somers). Levi Leach #65 , who married Josiah's daughter (Sarah #66 ) lived in Stephentown. Levi and Sarah's son, Amos #33, moved from Somers, NY to Morrow County, Ohio in 1834.

In the Vermont 1800 Federal Census Index, there is a record of Josiah Noble living in Bennington County, Pownal Township. His ID# is VTS1a2296443.

Josiah and his wife, Olive, had 11 children: Lucy, Sarah (#66), Miriam, Olive, Esther, Merey (Mercy), Anna, Mercy, Josiah, Ozem (Ozen), and Tryphena.
