Margaret (Huff) (Hough)

76. Margaret (Huff) (Hough) : (Married #1: Anthony Moore #75 in 1778 in Frederick, Virginia), (Married #2: Andrew Smith on February 13, 1810 in Frederick County, Virginia) (The source of all typed information inpurple is research obtained from numerous court documents and other sources by Doug Hart, a descendant of Albert G. Kenney).

Born: June 13, 1762 in Winchester, Frederick, Virginia of John Huff/Hough (#151) and Unknown Mother (#152)

Died: January 21, 1846 in Madisonville, Hamilton, Ohio; she is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Milford, Clermont County, Ohio.

[Her siblings, if any, are unknown]

Miscellaneous:

She and her husband (Anthony Moore) had 10 children: Francis "Franny" (#38) , Judy, William H., Morgan, Soloman, Maizy, Melinda, Louisa, Maria, and John. (Source of the children's names... click here.).

When her married daughter Fanny Kenney died around 1807, she took in her grandchildren Albert Gillespie Kenney (#19) (age ~4) and John Francis Kenney (age 0-2) and raised them along with her other minor children.

About 1 year later, her first husband passed away and she and several others were the executors of the estate. The estate sale was held on May 16, 1808. Margaret purchased quite a few items at the sale, including some of the animals, the clock, the ground lease and the hire of two of the slaves, but the slaves were not sold.

On February 6, 1809, Margaret became guardian of all of her 7 minor children John, Maria R., Morgan, Solomon, Mazy, Malinda and Louisa... and Albert and his brother, John, without their father (Joseph)'s "knowledge or consent." After that, the boys went to live with her. [Note: By ~1810, the boys were probably back with their father.] On the 1810 Census, Joseph was listed as living in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia. The Census shows eight people in the household, including one slave. There are two boys under age 10 (probably Albert and John), one male between 16-25, one male age 26-44 (one of these two would be Joseph), 1 girl under 10 and two females age 16-25. It is unknown who the fourth male and three females were.

On February 13, 1810, Margaret married Andrew Smith.

Anthony's estate was settled and the account filed with the court on May 16, 1813. After paying all the debts of the estate, the net proceeds were $1,339.80. The settlement paper indicates that Margaret Smith (late Margaret Moore) and Francis T. Martin were administrators of the estate and were liable to pay over the $1,329.80.

In 1818, Margaret, with the help of her son, Solomon, sold the slaves that her husband had owned.

Beginning on December 12, 1819, Joseph Kenney (Fanny's surviving husband) brought a suit in Frederick County, VA against the administrators of Anthony's estate as the "next friend" of his two sons, seeking to recover their 1/10 share of their grandfather’s estate. Albert and John were minors at the time, but became adults at least by 1830 while the case was still going on, and were substituted in as the plaintiffs in lieu of Joseph.

"By 1820, she and her new husband had moved to Ohio, apparently to the Cincinnati area. Findagrave.com lists her as Margaret Huff Moore (1762-1846), wife of Anthony Moore, and she is associated with her son Solomon. There is no mention of Andrew Smith on that memorial, who she had married after Anthony died."

As stated at the top of this page, she is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Milford, Clermont County, Ohio.
