Revolutionary War Pension Letters

Written in 1851 and 1855 for William Love (#115)

Virginia
Upshur County

On this twenty second day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight Hundred and Fifty One, Personally appeared Robert Love in Open Court in the said County of Upshur (now in session) and in the state of Virginia, resident of Meigs County in the State of Ohio Aged 50 years who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the Benefit of the Act of congress the 7th July 1838, and the several supplementary acts there to act of the 8 March 1842,17 June 1844, 3 February 1848 [?] passed for the benefit of the soldiers who served in the war of the revolution the widows and children of the same and he the said Robert Love declares himself to be one of the children and heirs at law of William Love deceased, together with five other Brothers and Sisters all children and heirs of the said William Love dec’d he further declares that the names of the said other 5 children is as follows to wit, Samuel, Charles, Rebecca, Eleanor and William who are now all living, and he further declares that his said Father William love (from the best information that he is in the possession of) served as a soldier in and during the Revolutionary War, that he was under stood to have been attached to a Regiment of Light Horse or Dragoons, in the Virginia Continental line, but the No. of the Regiment in which he belong, and the officers who commanded is not recollected at so late a period, but was understood by the children to have enlisted in the County of Shenandoah Va for during the War, and served to the close of the same, he further declares that their father and mother are both dec’d that about the year 1802 or 3 their Father became insane and was removed to the Lunatic Asylum at Williamsburg in the state of Virginia on the 28th day of April 1803, as will appear by the certificate of the superintendant of the said asylum had with presented said that he was understood to have lived some 8 to 10 years in said asylum and there died, and he said Robert further declares that his mother Winford Love the widow of the said William, sometime after the Death of her said husband removed from the County of Shenandoah to the County of Harrison and afterward the County of Lewis was formed out of the same section of county and again the County of Upshur was formed, at which place the said Winford Love resides and remained widow untill her death which took place on the 27th day of December 1847 at the Residence of her daughter Rebecca, which will appear By the Testimony of Mr. John Maxwell here with annexed, he further declares that the said William + Winford Love were married in this County of Shenandoah in the said state of Virginia sometime in the year 1791, as will appear By The Testimony of Mr. Wm. Bonnifield of Ohio, here with presented, and further that Samuel Love is the Oldest child and Charles the next and so on in the manner in which they are mentioned above and that that Samuel is a bout 60 years of age, and that the children always have understood that their Father has served as aforesaid and that they were entitled to a pension for the serving of their Father aforesaid, but having been brought up almost without education and in indignant circumstances, and their father dying at so early a date has always prevented them from making an application at an earlier period, and that they never have made an application heretofore, or received anything whatever, but it may be that their father has received his bounty land and dispersed of it as it appears upon the books of the grant land officer, that there was a Warrant issued to Francis Graves assignee of William Love, on the 29th day of May 1792 he further declares that his mother Winford Love’s name before her said marriage to said Love was Winford Carney, and further he declares that the reason that he did not make the declaration in this county in which he resided as required by law is that his mother died as before stated at this residence of her Daughter (now in said County of Upshur) and that he came in from the state of Ohio to the County of Upshur in order to administer on the Estate of is mother, and also, to make out the declaration for the papers aforesaid.

Robert Love

John Maxwell a resident of said County of Upshur this day appeared in Open Court-now sitting, and made the following declaration after being duly sworn according to law that he was called on to make a coffin for Mrs. Winsford Love who died at the residence of her daughter Rebecca in said County, and that he did make the coffin as afore said and that he saw the said Winsford Love buried in the same, this was sometime in the month of December 1847.

At a court held for the County of Upshur May 22, 1851
This day the foregoing declaration of Robert Love of Meigs County in the State of Ohio was presented in open court and the said Robert Love subscribing his name thereto and making oath to the truth of said declaration, also John Maxwell of the County of Upshur in the state of Virginia came into court and made oath to the truth of the certificate annexed to said declaration and subscribed his name thereto for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the several [acts] of the congress of the United States agreeably to the specifications set forth in said declaration which is ordered to be certified to the Commisioner of pensions in the city of Washington for investigation.

Dear Sir
I vale myself this oppertunity of writing you few lines- Winford Love the wife of Wm Love applied Some few years ago for pension as one of widowes of the Revolution and from Some cause has not succeeded I wish you to examin the papers in the office and see what defect thare is in them and inform me and I wil try to [?]tify them I am satisfide that it waus his rite for the experience of some forty five years past to my own knowledge and in conversation with old men who knew him before the servises and afterwardes is conclusive on my parte if rite could take place; you will find that Wm Love went to the Lunitic assilem in about the year of 1803 or 4 to Williamsburge and for those resons his papers was not taken care of and allmost every trace of the matter destroyed andly what [?]ting proof could be obtained. Henry F Westfall has bin atending to the business but I suppose that he will not have ennymore business withe that department in concequence of abreach upon the public you no vary well what that is & please inform me soon on this matter & oblige your friend.
