Meeting at Buckhannon

According to the wishes of the loyal citizens of Buckhannon and vicinity, a primary meeting was held at the Court House on Saturday August 2, 1862, for the purpose of making arrangements for a Mass Meeting of the county for war, and other purposes.

After which the following resolutions was submitted and read by D. D. T. Farnsworth, which were unanimously carried.

Resolved, That the citizens of Upsher County, be requested to meet en masse at the Court House, Buckhannon, on Saturday next, August 9, 1862, for the purpose of taking into consideration the best means to be adopted in responding to the President’s call for volunteers, and the securing of our new State.

Resolved, That a Committee of five be appointed by the Chair to correspond with suitable speakers for that occasion; and that a special request be made that the Hon. W. T. Willey and Auditor Crane be present to address the people.

Resolved That this meeting earnestly request the citizens of Upshur county to weigh well the late acts and doings of Senator Charlile in the Senate of the United States against the new State, and his policy in the prosecution of the war, which we think tends to the perpetuation of this unholy rebellion rather than to put it down, and then and there to give him a fair trial, hoping that he will abide the decision of his constituents.

First District - R. Fretwell and N. B. Warmsley.

Second District - O. B. Louden and A. Teeter.
