"Congressional Meeting in Upshur County, Va."

“Congressional Meeting in Upshur County Va.”

At a meeting of the citizens of Upshur county, held at Buchannon on the 24th day of September, 1861, for the purpose of appointing delegates to a convention to be held at Parkersburg on the 24th inst, to nominate a candidate for Congress for the 11th District of Virginia. On motion E. J. Colerider Esq, was called to the chair, and Dr. P. F. Pennell was appointed Secretary.

On motion the following gentlemen were appointed delegates to represent this county in said Convention viz. Frederick Berlin, D. D. T. Farnsworth, John S. Smith, Dr. P. F. Pennell, Jacob Teter, Benjamin Gould, Watson Westfall, Jacob Waugh, M. J. Fogg and E. J. Colerider.

On motion of Mr. D. D. T. Farnsworth, it was

Resolved that John Davis of Harrison, or the delegates appointed to said Convention from Harrison county, be appointed alternates to cast the vote of this county in the absence of the delegates of this county.

On motion, it was

Resolved, That the preceedings of this meeting be published in the Union papers of Wheeling, Parkersburg and Morgantown.

[Note: The paper is dated September 10, 1861, but it refers to a meeting that took place on September 24, 1861. This must be a misprint in the paper. The meeting had to have taken place on a date prior to the date on the paper.]
