Plants in the Ecotone Trail Gardens

The ecotone trail gardens at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center include more than 150 different species of plants, eight of these are threatened species and five are endangered species.

A threatened species is one likely to become endangered. Threatened species in our gardens include Bahama Cassia (Senna mexicana), Blackbead (Pithecellobium keyense), Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni), Nightshade (Mullen) (Solanum donianum), Paurotis Palm (Acoelorrhaphe wrightii), Satinleaf (Chrysophyllum oliviforme), Shrubby False Buttonweed (Spermacoce verticillata), and Simpson's Stopper (Myrcianthes fragrans).

An endangered species is one in danger of becoming extinct. Endangered species in our gardens include Cardinal airplant (Tillandsia fasciculata), Peperomia (Peperomia obtusifolia), Redberry Stopper (Eugenia confusa), Thatch Palm (Thrinax radiata), and Wild Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum).

The table below lists gardens where particular plants are found. Click on the common name of each plant to see photographs and plant descriptions.

Disclaimer: Although plants are listed for particular gardens in the chart below, exact locations do change because birds and wind distribute seeds, saltwater intrudes, and drought takes its toll.
