The Gibbs' crest, as shown, is Scottish. Variations of the spelling are Gibb, Gibbe, Gibbs, Gibbes, and others. The motto translation is "Firm of purpose." This Gibbs crest was first found in Invernesshire. It is unknown whether on not John's family used this crest.
It is believed that the forefathers of Nicholas Gibbs (#199), because of religious and political reasons, migrated from England, their mother country, about the time of the execution of Charles I in 1649 and the reign of Oliver Cromwell. John Nicholas Gibbs, Sr. left England and married a woman in Amsterdam and never went back to London. They sought refuge along the Rhine River in Germany and it was in the village of Wallruth, near the town of Krumbach, Duchy of Baden, that Nicholas (#199) was born on September 29, 1733.
