Horrible Murder of a West Virginian in Illinois

BLOOMINGTON, ILL., November 4, -- A dispatch of Sunday noted the finding of a dead body of an unknown man in a pasture lot near Lowanda, in this (McLean) county. An investigation held today indicates that the name of the deceased was Robert Augler; that his home was in Grafton, West Virginia, and that he lately lived in Champaign county, Illinois. He was murdered several days ago, judging from wounds on the body, and from the fact that his clothing is saturated with water and blood. The back of his head was smashed to a jelly with a club. There was a bullet-hole through the left side, entering the back at the sixth rib, and another bullet-hole from the right cheek deep into the neck. The hat, coat and boots were missing, and the pockets reversed and rifled, except the inner vest pocket, in which were three letters, written by Miss Flora C. Colerider, Grafton, W. Va., and addressed as above to deceased. He was light complexioned, had auburn hair and blue eyes, was aged about twenty-five years, well dressed and genteel in appearance. He was seen Sunday a week ago passing northward through Towanda, followed by a dangerous looking tramp, aged thirty, with a large scar on the right side of the face, wearing yellow overhalls, torn and ragged coat, white hat, upturned behind, and carrying a valise. These clothes were found in a field near the dead body.
